If you want to become a data analyst, you need to learn technical skills like SQL and Excel, practice those skills, and build projects.
To do all three of those, you’re gonna need some data.
To help you out, here are 10 websites you can download datasets for free.
1. Kaggle (https://www.kaggle.com/datasets)
2. iPums (https://usa.ipums.org/usa/)
3. Tableau Public (https://www.tableau.com/learn/articles/free-public-data-sets)
4. Google Dataset Search (https://datasetsearch.research.google.com/)
5. FiveThirtyEight (https://data.fivethirtyeight.com/)
6. Data.gov (https://data.gov/)
7. Datahub.io (https://datahub.io/docs)
8. WHO Global Health Observatory (https://apps.who.int/gho/data/node.main)
9. UC Irvine Machine Learning Repository (https://archive.ics.uci.edu/datasets)
10. Data.world (https://data.world/)
I recommend starting with datasets like Kaggle which are already pre-cleaned. This will help you learn basic aggregations and simple analysis. After that you can work your way up to working with raw data on websites like Data.gov which can be quite dirty and are more challenging to work with. This is more representative of what you’ll find in the real world though.
Enjoy!
